But it is not incoming traffic that is backed up. It is outbound traffic leaving the OBX. Normally it slows to a crawl on Saturdays in Kitty Hawk about 11am. Today it started at 9:30 am or before. Traffic is literary stopped on the bypass at my office in Kitty now - 10am |

Many firetrucks going up to near the rt 12 intersection which is really backing up traffic now. This is the worst I have seen outbound traffic this year if not many may years. All outbound - leaving. |

I guess everybody decided to get ahead of the typical 11am backup. And it is turn day at the end of the busiest beach week of the summer. Love our NC coast, but not in the summer. Nope. |

This week I've been out between 10 AM and 2 PM in the area between Publix and the YMCA in Nags Head. Traffic has been bumper to bumper north & south on the bypass and south bound on the beach road. Oddly I didn't experience north bound beach road bumper to bumper. Thankfully no accidents to bring traffic to a stand still. Just moving slow. Drivers even paused in order to allow me to make left turns. Sweet! Is this weekday heavy traffic due to 4th of July visitors on top of the usual visitors? Or a sign of summer fun to come? |

Funny but Saturday last week at the bridge was actually a bit worrisome: no traffic at all! I was wondering if this foretold a "bad" summer (low visitation) but apparently not. |

Arriving on Saturdays has not been a problem for some time, I have to think that air b&b and vrbo allowing mid week turn overs to be the reason. Some days now are just as bad as Saturdays - like Friday and Mondays. |

My Sister in-law was caught in that - she said it was Horrible. I heard there was a closure of the RT64 Manns Harbor Bridge for a period because of a disabled camper - Probably diverted people north, We came through KH around 8:00 with no problems. |

Traffic Sunday was just about as bad leaving. There were/are a lot of people here in the middle of the OBX (Duck to Nags Head). |

On sat, we heard it was 90 min heading off from fry alley (MP10) to the WMB. That's crazy. |

I liked it better back in the day when the backups were "scheduled". Predictable. We always had a workaround. We'd check in on a Friday and hunker down for a day and a half. After that it was all cool. Checked out the following Friday and got out of town before the next scheduled chaos. |

My wife and daughter left Salvo Saturday at 4:15 PM and said traffic northbound in NH and KDH was heavy but with no backups. With 3 stops they made it home in 8 hours and 15 minutes. Not bad considering turnover day, holiday weekend, but she did forgo 95N and DC (as we always do). She said southbound onto the island was ugly. |
