Admittedly this isn’t exactly a video on how to cut them yourself. (Although we do have one that covers doing just that. Including 5 dumb DIY curtain bangs moves to avoid. Just what you need for taking the scary out of cutting them at home.)
Still she does reveal some interesting think-abouts.
So that after watching you should have solid understanding of what you’re trying to accomplish and how.
Just wish she had covered how to section your hair before starting. That triangle parting’s critical.

Now the first takeaway is a properly cut curtain bang needs to have a decent slant to it. Meaning from the shortest piece that grazes your brow to the longest that caresses your neck you want a fairly long, gentle sweep.
Tip: Bangs should always be cut with a center part to insure symmetry. So both sides are even? But you can part them however you wish when wearing them.
Next, the end of the bang should run to at least your jaw line. If it terminates around your ear lobe, well, the cut has not been done in the spirit of this 70’s fringe. That’s just a longer traditional bang.
Now one thing many stress about is where they should start.
Simple.
Use your eyebrows to guide how short to cut them. That’s right. Typically you want them grazing your brow.
BUT that does NOT mean you cut them that short.
Also keep in mind the shorter your start point the stronger the curtain bang affect you’ll get.

Given how many salon horror stories I’ve read, it’s no surprise you want to know how to do curtain bangs on yourself.
All the more if it seems everyone has these face framers but you.

It’s great for beginners. Walking you step by step clearly describing what to do each step of the way.
Basic Essentials
- Duckbill clips
- Hair scissors
- Fine tooth comb
Step 1: Make your middle part.
Step 2: Section the hair for the bang into a triangle.
Many struggle with how to start this. Basically you do a traditional triangle parting, The depth varies. Typically from one to two inches back from your hairline.
The size of the triangle also varies by how much hair you have, how much you want in your fringe (the further back you go the fuller the fringe will be), and the hair’s texture.
The fine haired will need more devoted to their bang. Too little will leave you with a wispy fringe that tends to almost disappear.
On the other hand thick haired girls may need less. As too much leaves you with unwanted chunkiness.
Again, the ideal depth varies from one to two inches back from your hairline.
You also want to use your eyebrow as a reference point for how wide this section will be. Targeting the width of the triangle to land anywhere from the middle to the outer edge of your brow.
The exact spot depends on your face shape. Also typically the wider, more prominent your forehead is the wider you’ll want this section to be.
Now you want to make sure the point where your triangle is parted is even. You want the ends ending at the same point on both of your temples. That insures you’re working with two equal pieces.
Step 3: Wet the hair – makes it easier for non-stylists to cut. (All the more important if trying to get perfect curtain bangs even with a cowlick.)
Step 4: Comb the bang straight down. Remembering to comb through the sectioned out hair to get rid of the tangles.
Step 5: Divide the bang in two and make your first cut straight across.
I know everyone says this, but please go longer with that first snip to avoid cutting too short. Something lip long is a fair length to start with.
All the more if you’re not a stylist and it’s your first time banging out Bardots in your bathroom.
Tip: Keep the hair straight so it’s even when cut. A hack for this cut is to keep your fingers parallel to the floor. Oh and don’t pull the hair too taut. That helps insure a what-you-see-is-what-you-get result. Keeping in mind hair shrinks as it dries.
Note too that in this case Gabi started cutting right under her nose. As she points out, it’s a good proxy for being long enough to graze your cheek bone area.
Then check your work to see that both sides of the fringe are even. Trim as needed.
Step 6: Divide the bang in half.
Take one of the two halves and while holding between your fingers over direct it to the opposite side. You can see what that means in the video. This is how you create the swoopiness you’re looking for.
Tip: To create your swooped out curtain bang here’s another way to look at it. You want your fingers to be parallel to the part on the side this hair came from.
Then trim along your fingers removing the longer hair so it’s all the same length as the shortest bit. Doing so will cause the hair to bevel or slope from short to long when styled to each side.
Tip: Be sure you’re using hair shears not something you picked out of your junk drawer. (And you do have those, right?)
Step 7: Double check for evenness.
You want the long hair on the sides, the middle and the center of both sides to match and be all even. Paying most attention the middle strands which should be the shortest and then the two edge pieces or the longest.
Point cut as needed to even things out.
Step 8: Blow dry using either a round brush and dryer or a blow dry brush.
The technique she uses is to blow dryer brush them with the hair going backwards. This is how to blow dry curtain bangs in a way that gives you both swoop and lift.
Step 9: How do they look? Too bulky? Too thick? If anything but awesome point cut them as needed to thin them out.
Tip: Remember when point cutting the idea is to remove excess bulk to soften the look. Not cut off more length.
