  1. #1 Best Colleges in New York City AreaColumbia UniversityNew York, NY·4 Year·Rating 3.82 out of 5 1,365 reviewsAlum: As a biochemistry student at Columbia University, my experience was extraordinary. The Core Curriculum was a highlight, exposing me to literature, philosophy, art history, and music. This interdisciplinary approach enriched my understanding and fostered critical thinking and analytical writing skills.Beyond academics, I loved engaging with the community through Peer Health Exchange (now S-HEAL), where I educated high school students on health and wellness. This experience enhanced my communication skills and deepened my commitment to public health.Writing for The Spectator allowed me to make scientific concepts accessible, improving my ability to articulate ideas clearly. Additionally, Columbia’s vibrant arts scene, from Miller Theatre performances to Wallach Art Gallery exhibitions, provided a rich cultural balance to my studies.Overall, Columbia offered a holistic education, blending rigorous science, arts, and community involvement, preparing me well for the future.... 3. #3 Best Colleges in New York City AreaNew York UniversityNew York, NY·4 Year·Rating 3.76 out of 5 5,754 reviewsSenior: Attending New York University has been an incredible journey that I highly recommend. The urban campus, deeply embedded in NYC, offers unique connections to the city's core communities, enhancing academic and professional experiences. NYU's lively and diverse student communities, such as the LGBTQ+ Center and the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs, have been influential, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. Academically, NYU excels in providing rich research opportunities, including the Dean's Undergraduate Research Fund (DURF) and the Undergraduate Research Conference. However, one area for improvement is financial support for housing and living expenses. The high cost of living in New York City can be challenging, and additional assistance would greatly benefit students.... 6. #5 Best Colleges in New York City AreaRutgers University–New BrunswickPiscataway, NJ·4 Year·Rating 3.65 out of 5 6,142 reviewsAlum: During my years at Rutgers, I seized numerous chances at leadership and teaching thanks to the university's commitment to equal access. I spent time as Resident Life and volunteered at a local hospital, gaining experience beyond the classroom. The university's size may seem daunting, but its bus system makes navigating campus a breeze. Each campus has its own unique atmosphere, from the bustling city-esque College Avenue to the serene Douglass campus, complete with botanical gardens and farms. As someone from New York City, the "Knight Mover" service was one of my favorites; this service, available from 3am to 6am, ensured safe transportation for students–with no questions asked. My biggest regret was that not many students took advantage of this opportunity, whether it was because they simply didn’t know about it or because they didn’t like the small white pickup van. This can definitely be optimized: more vans, more awareness, and maybe students can volunteer to paint the vans!... I appreciated the diverse academic offerings, vibrant campus life, and numerous research opportunities. The knowledgeable faculty and the university's prime location near major cities like New York and Philadelphia were significant advantages. However, administrative processes could be more efficient, and certain campus facilities need updates. Parking was a notable issue due to limited spaces and high costs. I graduated with a degree in Psychology with a concentration in Behavioral Neuroscience and a minor in Special Education. I had a great time at Fairfield and made so many memories and friends that are going to last a lifetime. Since Fairfield is a small school I was in small classes where the teachers knew all of our names and really cared about how we did in our classes and post grad. Even though I had a great experience there are things that I would like to change. The school does not listen to the students opinions and needs. There have been times when friends of mine have reached out to the school with their opinions on how to better certain aspects of the school and they did not hear back. The school is inclusive, but lacks diversity. When I spoke to friends about this, they said that it can feel alienating, so this is another aspect of the school that I would change for the better. Overall, a great experience!... There are multiple advisors in every department who give amazing and free academic advice and life advice (always a good add on). The students are sweet and helpful, but there is no party scene as alot of the students are commuters. I met my best friend at this college! I was a psychology student who minored in chemistry- I have to say that the psychology department and the childhood education department were the best 2 departments in the whole school (and of course the women's volleyball team). There are some amazing and well rounded professors who teach here! I enjoyed my time and would recommend it to all people wanting to come to CUNY. The financial office is surprisingly not that bad- they get back to you in a timely manner and if someone qualifies- they offer a good amount of financial aid. 27. #25 Best Colleges in New York City AreaFordham UniversityBronx, NY·4 Year·Rating 3.69 out of 5 2,341 reviewsSophom*ore: Fordham University at the Lincoln Center is an excellent campus to choose especially when you are invested in the arts. There are always nearby events and so many connections you can make. However, it can be mentally tough to leave the Manhattan campus because of the "tunnel system" (hallways that connect the dorms to the classrooms) so make sure to utilize NYC as much as you can. The food was also better than expected. With all the bad reviews on the food all over the internet (I know you saw them), Fordham really took it upon themselves to improve the quality of their dishes as I never get bored of the food. So, if something bothers you on campus, speak up so Fordham can improve it!Also, the people at Fordham are very welcoming. As it is a small school, Fordham hosts so many social events, that it makes it really simple for anyone to be involved and to socialize in some aspect. Fordham is really how you make of it....
